JB Teddy & Co.
JB Teddy & Co. is opening Memorial Day weekend 2024!
Who
I am fortunate to have partnered with Paris (Frenchie P) to launch JB teddy & Co. WE ARE HONORED TO BRING OUR TALENTS AND WARES TO the BRODHEAD HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S GIFT SHOP in THE DEPOT MUSEUM.
What
Our magical little shop sells locally created merchandise inspired by Brodhead’s rich history and legends. ASTER CROW & FRENCHIE P WARES ARE INSPIRED BY OUR NATURAL RESOURCES, PEOPLE, AND INCOMPARABLE HISTORY AS A QUINTESSENTIAL VICTORIAN TOWN STEEPED IN CULTURE AND INNOVATION.
Why
JB Teddy & Co.?
The initials “JB” are inspired by our town’s grace & generosity of memorializing a passenger who mysteriously arrived at our Depot.
On January 11th, 1869, a woman 60 years of age arrived by train. She fell violently ill in the waiting room, and was removed by Messrs Wood & Wheaton (overseers of the poor) to Henry Soors’ residence. A physic was called, but she sadly she passed the next day without having revealed her identity.
Revs. Lewis and Webb of the Methodist and Congregationalist Churches officiated, and a large contingency of our little town attended her service. The Unknown traveler is buried in Greenwood, in the cemetery’s only unmarked grave.
Upon her passing, the contents of her trunk were examined, and her only identifiable belongings were a silver thimble and a gold signet ring bearing the initials “JB.” …
Teddy is in honor of Theodore “Teddy” McNair. A young man who died tragically at sea in 1873 at the age of 17. It is believed that Teddy passed while serving in the Navy. Unlike “JB,” Teddy is sadly not memorialized, or commemorated in his family burial plot in Greenwood.
Teddy’s inclusion as part of our shop’s name reflects our commitment as researchers & storytellers to memorialize those who have been forgotten, AND TO PRESERVE THEIR PLACE within our local history.
Augusta W. Ryall’s account of “JB” is documented here on Lap of Legends … my Brodhead research blog
